If you’ve read this blog more than just once you probably know I have a bit of a thing for using natural elements to decorate my home, and for a budget-savvy gal like me, there’s no better way of introducing this textural earthiness to a space than via a great-outdoors scavenger hunt. So, until money grows on trees, I’m taking my free share of what already does…twigs that is.
This starburst inspired wreath was basically free and super-duper fast and easy to make.
Fortunately for me, where I live there’s no shortage of sticks just lying around…
…and after collecting my pile – with a bit of help (or hindrance, more like)…
…I broke them down into similar sized lengths.
I then cut a disk from an old cereal box to create my base. I figured the twigs wouldn’t completely cover and hide it so I wrapped it in twine which gives it extra rigidity as well as a nice, rustic look.
Using a hot glue gun, I worked in sections to attach my sticks to the twine covered disk, building them up where necessary to create a pleasing wreath shape.
To finish, I simply tied a length of twine around the central disk to create a hanging loop.
I like to use decorative upholstery tacks to hang stuff like this.
My little wreath is a bit random and unstructured, and whilst not for everyone, I like the rustic appeal of it. The great thing about a project like this is you can make it as neat or as messy, big or small, bulky or sparse as you like!
i love….gonna try it myself
Muy buena idea, la pondré en práctica, voy mucho al bosque y hay mucho material
This is awesome! Simple, yet so elegant. What a wonderful easy way to add a natural element to your home decor. Thanks for sharing your idea!
Thank you for sharing the step by step process, and with clear pictures too. It seems crazy easy and beautiful. I really like it.
Hi Kristine! I love your wreath! I’m featuring a link to your blog on this week’s post and encouraging my readers to come visit themselves. You are the inspiration behind my stick wreath endeavor! Thanks for the beautiful project.

I stuckm a pine cone from the back through the hole. I hand it outside on a garden shed wall. Thank you for the idea.
Hi Wanda
That sounds cute :-)
Thanks for leaving a comment to let me know.
Kristine
I’m looking forward to giving this a try ! Can’t wait. Thanks for sharing this great idea !
I can’t wait to try to make this Wreath.
I love this twig wreath!!! I am going to make one VERY soon! Thank you! First time visiting your site off pinterest. You have some really great ideas, thanks so much for sharing :)
I like it. Something else you can do to it is-if there is any around-add leaves, spiraled or twirled twigs, bird feathers-either wear gloves or wash hands after picking and adding theses- add string and put leaves on it with the thing hanging from the Wreath.
I love this also! Its natural and rustic. Very economic also. I might try and spray a light coat of varnish.
Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks Debbie. The varnish idea sounds nice. It would give the colour if the twigs some depth.
Def doing this, love it!!!
Love this idea!!! Many possibilities, one could glue berries around the centre or even weave brightly coloured yarns around the middle. Thanks!
Looks great! I love natural materials, too
Thank you for posting this. I made one today.
This is gorgeous. You’ve inspired me to make one. THANK!
Was just wondering what I could make next!!Thank you for inspiring this old Granny!!x
love this wreath !!!! did you paint the twigs or leave them natural ? On my computer they seem to be painted white.
Hi Joanne
They are just natural though I have seen people make variations using my tutorial and they have painted them all sorts of colours.
Kristine
I so love people like you that have the ability to come up with creative ideas that people like me can do. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
Thanks so much for sharing… you are very creative and I luv natural designs ! This is beautiful!
Thanks, Elizabeth
Love the “naturalness” of your stick wreath. Would like to make a number of them, one for each holiday, may paint some, add glitter, or just put tiny, but simple handmade ornaments on for Christmas.
I love this idea. But I’m curious as to what type of glue you used and would this wreath do well outdoors. I’m thinking of hanging it on a fence to brighten up the area.
Hi Rose
I used basic stick glue for a hot glue gun. I believe you can buy heavy-duty hot glue sticks. You could also use standard hot glue (to first tack everything together – as it creates an instant bond) in conjunction with exterior grade silicone. That should do the trick!
Kristine
Hi!!! You rock. I Love your ideas!! Question – I want to hang this twig wreath on my shed. i’m so excited to find the right twigs. what else can i use besides a cereal box, i need this to be weather proof, well sort of. help!! i cannot think of anything that is in a circle….hahaha!
Heidi
Hmmm, a few things I thought of that could work…an extra large metal washer, a CD, a small plastic doughnut frisbee, a round wooden coaster (simply cut a hole in the center with a circular drill bit). Otherwise, you could cut the disk from a piece of sheet rubber. Aside from that, maybe just have a browse through the isles of your nearest hardware store. They will probably have something appropriate you can re-purpose :)
Hope this helps Heidi.
Kristine
I absolutely love your starburst wreath!!
I went searching and searching and even went camping where there are tons of sticks and cannot find sticks that are straight enough to make this wreath:(
Where did you get the sticks?
Any chance you want to make one and sell it to me?
Nicole
Ha, ha. Really? No straight-enough sticks? That’s crazy! Mine are mainly from gums (Eucalyptus) though I had heaps to choose from. Are you sure you’re not being too fussy? ;)
Some of mine are from much longer branches which were very bendy – I just snapped off the straightish sections I wanted.
Would love to make one for you though according to my IP address look-up you’re in the States? Not sure that paying for shipping from Australia would be worth it :(
Keep hunting Nicole…I’m sure you’ll find some.
Since I like to use natural elements from our little 5 acres, you have made one of my favorites. Like you, I take my dogs with me. They help me find turkey feathers from which I made a wreath. Thanks for showing and sharing this with all of us.
Ooh, a turkey feather wreath sounds lovely. There is so much interest in turkey feathers – they are actually quite beautiful. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment Paula :)
