Some interesting wall angles and the need for tonnes of storage really dictated the design for our master bedroom. Function and budget were high priorities so I decided to work ‘pretty’ around ‘practical’. The neutral palette combines loads of natural texture with vintage elements for a relaxed yet fresh feel. While there are still a few additions I’m considering I’m pretty happy with how it’s coming along. I’m also waiting to put some finishing touches on the built-in robe doors and will share the after pics of them soon too.
So, here’s the floor plan just to give you an idea of the room’s weird shape (BED 1)…
And here’s the space before (cringe!)…
Well, that was after we already simplified the canvas by painting out the green walls and brown trim (Dulux Chalk USA on the walls, Dulux White Watsonia on the trim), replacing the dirty old carpet and removing the completely translucent ultramarine blue curtains!
If you’ve been following this makeover from the beginning, aside from being incredibly patient), you should also recognise a fair bit of the decor.
Pretty much all of the furnishings have been thrifted, bought on clearance or hand-made and every piece of furniture in the room is second-hand. To avoid a massively lengthy post I’ll cover each refurb in more detail in separate upcoming posts.

I LOVE how you put all this together–truly a designer-professional look!
Amazing! Looks like something out of a magazine…
Take care,
Lisa
Can you tell me how you did the armoire? I have one I’ve been meaning to redo for a while and I love how yours looks. Thanks!
That is awesome! I would love for you to link up at my Strut Your Stuff Party!

Get Out! I had your site bookmarked several months back, but have not been in a good routine of looking at things regularly. Just popped over to your post today, and now I know all over again why I bookmarked The Painted Hive! Just fabulous, darling! Be so proud of yourself… and I will look forward to those tutorials!
Love,

I just love your makeover! I was really enjoying it because your bedroom layout is exactly like ours. I recently redid our room, but still tweaking it. There’s a coule elements I’d like to “finish” but, you know….$$$$. :)
One thing that was super helpful to see in your room was your nightstands. I bought a small dresser that I really wanted to use as my nightstand, but wasn’t sure if it would look funny having our lamps different heights. I am soooooo rethinking my layout now!!!!! thank you! :) Love your blog!
What fabulous eye candy and inspiration. I appreciate all your great ideas. Thank you for sharing.
Kristine, this was one of the BEST makeover’s I’ve seen. You went into so much detail, and you know us so well, all those before and afters, that’s what its all about. I am IN LOVE with the way you refinished all that furniture, and CAN NOT wait until you show us how.
I am totally new to blog, and am your very happy newest follower.
If you can’t resist one more party, even if mine is teeny tiny for now, I would REALLY love if you shared this at **Amaze me August**, you would totally make my day.
Thanks again, Bella :)
Oh, and my new Christmas Party **6 weeks 2 Jingle** is up and running too, just in case, you like that kind of thing. :)
Awesome! You are so talented. The bedroom looks so calm.
What a fabulous transformation Kristine! I love all the before and afters. What a difference! Great job!

Kristine. Seriously, GORGEOUS room. What a great place to relax in. That armoire is to-die-for! I also love your window treatment and your bedspread. Thank you for sharing with the world. I love your blog – keep sharing!
MAGNIFICENT!! Golly gosh…where do I start..everything is just ever so perfect..and I love what you did with that vintage painting…using the framework..awesome.
Here is a little trick that the designers often use..as one of your beside tables is slightly higher than the other..this means your lamps end up being the same way too…but by just placing a few old books under the lower lamp..this will then even it up and look better visually when looking at it from front on. :)
Lovely bedroom, so airy and relaxing. Love the framed map headboard.
What a perfect, stunning space!
What a difference to all of those pieces of furniture! Thanks for the inspiration – I’m needing to put some effort into our Master bedroom and this gives me great ideas. I love how it’s classic but not cluttered. :)
Kristine, first off just want to THANK YOU so much for linking up to **Amaze me August**, you made me so happy, by swinging by, and participating.
I LOVED this makeover so much, I HAD to FEATURE it today. I am dreaming of a bedroom makeover more than ever now, lol. You gave such a wonderful tutorial, I am just loving it.

Your bedroom is absolute serenity! I can’t remember which link party I originally saw it at, but when I saw all the linen in the thumbnail, I immediately clicked on it! Love your painted armoire and the handmade linen throw is fabulous. Now I’m on the hunt for some affordable linen to make my own thanks to you! :)

I came over from Remodealholic. I love your room. I looks like it came from a magazine! I am now following your blog!
What a beautiful space!
My husband would love me forever if I did this to our bedroom–he loves maps! I would like to do something like this to our office. Just out of curiosity, I’m wondering if the map behind the bed gets in the way if you’re trying to lay in bed and read? Fantastic job!
This is a gorgeous room. Just found your blog! Cannot wait to read more! Congrats on your new addition too!
You did a fabulous job in your master bedroom! You have great style and it looks anything but canned or copied. I love originality. You seem confident in your vision for your home. I am looking forward to viewing the rest of your blog as I have time! Cindy
I am in love with the way you use accessories. I love the simplicity of your design too. I really need you to rub off on me. More isn’t always better.
Even though this is not a recent post, it’s new to me! I’m here from Tip Junkie. I am so crazy about your room! I can’t stop looking at the pictures. I love the color scheme, globes, maps, (so gorgeous!) and the finishes on the furniture. It captures so many elements I’m so fond of right now. You did a beautiful job. ♥
This makeover is unbelievable! I especially love the framed map. Genius! Visiting from tip junkie. Honored to share the features with you today :)
Just found your blog and am so impressed! This room makeover is amazing from the largest transformations to the small finishing touches! Very creative.
Your home is beautiful, and welcoming! What are your wall colors? I love that they are soothing and inviting, while creating a very calming backdrop for your other accessories. Great colors!
Hi Anon. All of my walls are painted Dulux Chalk USA. It looks warm in winter and cool in summer – love it.

You’ve done a wonderful job of making a beautiful home. I love how you have repurposed so many items.
Love the re-painted furniture, especially the pine armoire after!

Thanks for sharing.

Love it all, just feel that the gold ornate frame behind the bed stands out and doesn’t match anything else. Did you consider doing something else with it? I think the style is different from the rest. Your refinishing is amazing though and love what you did with the maps, the pillows on teh bed, everything else.
Anon
Thanks for your comment.
The gold frame isn’t supposed to ‘match’ everything else. I’m not into matchy-matchy decor and like a subtle eclectic hint. The gold does probably looks more saturated in the photos though. It is more muted in person.
I’m actually looking to switch out the black framed maps above the white cabinet for something more vintage and might use some more gilt frames there.
Kristine
I LOVE the framed map of Paris over the bed. Would you mind sending me a link to that map. I looked on the website, and could not find it. I would so appreciate it.
Thank you,
Barbymac1@aol.com

Hi.
Just recently discovered your blog and love it.
Could you please tell me where you got the very large map that you framed for over your bed? On a quest to find one and can’t locate anything like it.
Thanks so much!!

I love the idea of the old vintage map above the bed, I love to travel, i go to bed almost every night thinking of where my next travels will be. I was wondering where you found such a large map, i cant seem to find one anywhere. thanks!! love this blog!!
Jules Marie
I couldn’t find a large enough map either so I made my own. You can read about it here:

Hi. I came across your blog via SwissMiss and I just love your gorgeous bedroom! I love the well thought out details and soft furnishings. And that vintage map as headboard/detail is ingenious! Thanks for sharing how make this framed large-scale printable map. Looking forward to reading more of your wonderful ideas.
Cheers, Mary
I LOVE your bedroom! I’m currently updating my bed linen and I am loving that skirting you have on the ensemble – do you mind telling me where you got it from? Thanks in advance!
Hi Billie
So funny you have chosen to comment on my bedroom now. I’m planning to share some new updated pics later this week! I last blogged about it back in 2010!
I still have the same bed skirt (that’s the beauty of something simple and neutral). I’m not sure where you’re based though I’m in Australia. The bed skirt is from Bed, Bath and Table though I bought it around three years ago now. I have seen similar ones in lots of linen stores and on eBay.
