Bet I got you going there!
Nope, I haven’t been secretly pregnant for the past nine months (although, it would have been a good explanation for my tardiness around here).
But we do have an inherited fur child in the form of this curly beast…
Meet Rose, affectionately known as Fluffle – when she is at this point of pure shagginess (being clearly overdue for a hair cut!). Yes, I realise she has a hipster-grade beard, but trust me, she’s a girl dog.
Some of you may recognise Rose from a brief appearance in one of my posts from just over a year ago. At the time we were minding her for my mother-in-law whilst she was in hospital undergoing treatment.
Those who follow me closely will probably know that my lovely mother-in-law didn’t recover, and when she passed the question of Rose’s future was posed.
Although we weren’t exactly looking to take on a second dog, it just made sense for her to join us. She and our old boy, Cooper, get along well (in their own aloof kind of way) plus she is a real sweetheart.
Soooo, what do you do to make a new family member feel welcome…well, lavish them with cosy colour co-ordinating bedding of course!
In all seriousness, I don’t intentionally match my decor to my dogs, but for whatever reason it does tend to work out that way more often than it organically should! Maybe it’s a subconscious thing? Or maybe it’s just because I love warm neutrals which naturally blend with caramel-toned fur.
The previous adaptation of our master bedroom involved pops of green to marry with the green bench I usually have sitting at the foot of my bed. But as I’m currently using that bench in another house for staging purposes, I decided to try something different with monochromatic autumn shades.
The new blonde bench, which is just a cheapy from Kmart I already owned, is only temporary as it’s a bit too petite, but after having something at the foot of my bed for the past ten years it just doesn’t feel right leaving it completely bare.
If the tan tufted throw looks familiar it’s because I also have it in mustard! This colourway is ‘Biscotti‘ which is more neutral, giving it the flexibility to work with a wider range of schemes (and allowing Rose to camouflaged with ease!).
Moving into winter I added a second throw in the form of this versatile knitted blanket, which I’m sure will also be secondered for snuggly movie nights on the couch.
I usually keep my accent cushions quite simple and symmetrical, but this time around I’ve gone for something more interesting and relaxed.
The solid rust cushions are just cheapies from IKEA, with the three ‘special’ ones being from Manchester Warehouse.
I was trying to pick out a favourite but think I love them all equally!
Our bedroom has always had an eclectic transitional vibe, which is the style I love, so I find it amazing just how much more vintage this over-arching autumn palette has made things feel. I know to some people it may potentially come across as old-fashioned, however for me it’s just so full of warmth and soul.
In her previous home, Rose wasn’t allowed up on any furniture, let alone the bed (which is a totally fine personal pet ownership decision I respect and understand), so at first I wasn’t sure if she was ever going to feel comfortable with the idea.
But clearly that was naive of me because it probably only took two weeks for her to completely own the house!
If I’m not out of bed early enough in the morning then I can count on her jumping up to wake me with eskimo kisses.
Some products in this post were partially gifted by Manchester Warehouse.
All ideas and opinions are my own.
Good heavens. Look at them two, being aloof together and picture perfect. You sure you don’t get dogs to match your decor?!
Rose is a lucky girl.
Thanks Anna.
Beautifully coordinated and very cute.
Rose is an absolute darling! As a fur babe mama I find it much easier to match everything to my cats, makes great camouflage for the fur. When my mum left last year I brought her ginger cat Annie to live with me and my cats. No way was my “baby sister” going anywhere but with me. I promised my mum I would never let that happen. Glad to see Rose has joined her “brother” and his family.
Yep, Rose definitely belongs here now and I bet your Annie cat is grateful (even if she doesn’t know it).
Rose so cute and her fur looks incredibly soft. She matches the pillows and throw perfectly. I can image it gave your mother-in-law great comfort knowing she would be well taken care of.
She is super soft and fluffy – hence her nickname. We’ve never had a “furry” dog before so it’s a bit of a new thing but we get lots of “teddy bear” comments when we walk her. Now just to train her to stop chasing after the kangaroos!
I love your refresh! But I always love your stlye and creativeness. What I love more is that your heart was big enough to give Rose a home.
Sweet….coordinating canines! I like the warmth you added to your bedroom.
Thanks Jody :)
So very kind of you to take Rose into your home. Many dogs get left behind in a shelter which makes me so sad. Looks like Rose may be in her golden years as well so what’s a few more years of furry love gonna hurt? The bedroom design is so warm and cozy. I am a big fan of neutral off whites working together then if I want to throw on a Christmas red or autumn pumpkin shade, I can. Good to see you back.
Yes, she’s really no trouble. We just need to train her to stop chasing the kangaroos. She just turned six.
We, too, adopted my brother’s dog two years ago. She was a weekly groomed Maltese from the city going to be a farm dog. Whoa boy, now she’s got short hair with 6 week grooming appointments. She lived in a warm climate and came to where it’s cold with long winters. She wears a camouflage coat and fit right in with her new brother, a Red Heeler. They never had any problems and they are both senior citizens who both were raised by themselves. I wasn’t sure if it would work but am blessed to have both of them. I just couldn’t give her to another family. She has two mules as part of her family, they were rescues too. Animals are just wonderful and worth it!
I love that she is a Maltese farm dog! I’ll bet she is the happiest she’s ever been.
They are pretty resilient and adaptive, aren’t they? We’ve never had a dog which needed grooming before so that’s been a bit of a learning curve. We actually bought some clippers because during lock-down here none of the groomers were open. Sometimes her hair-cuts turn out less desirable than intended, but we’re getting there! Luckily she is very calm and patient.
Sweet Rose. I can’t imagine what she is feeling with her ‘mum’ being gone. I’m so glad you took her in where she is familiar with everyone and will be loved. I have seen pics of some animal shelter/rescue dogs (usually older dogs) that have lost their people and ended up at a shelter that are heartbreaking. You can tell they are very confused and sad. I wish I could bring them all home with me.
Your bedroom looks lovely.
Adorable dog. She looks like an extension of the rug she’s lying on. It’s good she stayed in the family, obviously a loving one. We had a joke about one of our dogs: “This is his house. He just lets us live here.”
They make a lovely couple. So happy you were there to take in Rose. She is lovely. I had a cocker spaniel named Jonah and she reminds me of him.
Thanks for sharing.
Blessings on you for keeping Rose in the family. Pets are so lost and confused when their owners die. Your bedroom looks so welcoming and calm. The cushions are lovely. Excellent job–as always.
Thanks Vikki :)
I’m a newbie to The Painted Hive!!! You are such a delight and so much fun!!!
Two things that are ‘Must Haves’ for me!!! I love love your style as well!!! I’m so thankful I came across this!!
Thank You!
Aw, thanks so much Madie. Glad you found me!
She’s beautiful!
Your bedroom looks relaxing and peaceful. Your née family member is adorable, poor thing. My condolences to you and your family it’s difficult losing a parent . We live in a society now that doesn’t take time to grieve. My thoughts are with you.
Thanks so much Sheryl.
Welcome Fluffle…both dogs are so sweet and dogs add something special to our lives.
They really do. My kids are besotted with her.
Beautiful as always Kristine; you’re certainly spoiling us with posts recently. I’m so pleased you have welcomed Rose into your family; having two dogs is great. Last year we had to say goodbye to our much loved 17 1/2 year old dog and I’m on the look out for another “sister” for our 10 year old Maltese Shi Tzu Lucy.
Great information. Thanks!
Glad she feels at home with a sidekick to hang with. They are a cute pair.
Biscotti is now my new favorite color! I have a chenille throw that I am now going to try to dye this color. Must be tempting to snuggle up with those doggos instead of getting any work done:)
Hi, love your room colours, nice & warm for our Aussie Winter time.
I was wondering where you found your lovely map? I didn’t see any reference to it in your post, but may have missed it. :)
Thanks Julie.
That map is actually a VERY old DIY project. I have a blog post about it here:

Back then resources for digital art weren’t as good. Nowadays you can find maps like this on sites such as Zazzle and All Posters.
